Hands in water

Water, Water, Everywhere, But Not a Drop to Drink
By VDG Chuck Schwab

It is expected that in just a few short years, over half of the world will live in water stressed areas. What does that mean?

  • There isn’t enough clean, reliable freshwater to meet our daily needs.
  • Demand for water (drinking, farming, sanitation) exceeds supply.
  • Access to water is limited due to poor infrastructure or contamination.

This can lead to:

  • Increased disease from unsafe water.
  • Food shortages due to struggling agriculture.
  • Economic hardship and displacement.
  • Conflict over limited resources.

Even in the US, water stress can show up through droughts, rising costs, and aging water systems.

The need for water is growing, not shrinking. Water access is becoming a global humanitarian priority. Water is tied to health, education and opportunity. Entire communities are being held back when people spend hours trying to find water or are getting sick from drinking contaminated water.

As Lions, we are uniquely positioned to respond because of our global reach and local presence. We can support clean water projects. Helping to fund wells and filtration projects and working with organizations who are already active in water stressed areas.

We can lead locally by organizing community education on water conservation and we can advocate for protecting our local water sources.

It is also important for us to educate and improve sanitation and hygiene by promoting proper handwashing and to provide hygiene kits in underserved communities around the world.

As Lions we need to dedicate campaigns specifically to protect our environment and water initiatives collaborating with schools, municipalities and other nonprofits like Water by Women. Building these partnerships, brings awareness and allows us to engage.

Water access is not just an issue overseas. It’s a shared global responsibility.  As Lions, we can lead by turning awareness into action, one community at a time.

By supporting LCIF, Lions are globally helping communities that are facing water insecurities today, by providing safe water and infrastructure. Along with education, communities are learning how to ensure that they have safe, clean water in a world that is facing new water challenges every day.
