About Us:

(opens in new tab) provides highly-trained assistance dogs, free of charge. Founded in 1975, the organization breeds, raises, and trains Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and mixes of the two to help individuals with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges. These dogs assist with daily tasks such as opening doors, picking up dropped items, and even alerting to important sounds. In addition to service dogs, Canine Companions also trains facility dogs that work alongside professionals in healthcare, education, and law enforcement. The organization is known for its rigorous training standards and lifelong support for both the dogs and their recipients, helping to foster greater independence and confidence for those they serve.

SEPTEMBER 2026 -- Paige Marino, DogFest DC Co-Chair & Jacqueline Cheshire, Team Lead, Capital Chapter of Canine Companions Team Lead -- We are excited to share that, thanks to your incredible efforts, we have officially surpassed our $100,000 goal for DogFest DC 2026, raising over $104,000!
DogFest DC is currently ranked among the top three fundraising DogFest events nationwide. As one of only 10 DogFest events in the country, our chapter's collective achievements are truly special. Since we are not located near a Canine Companions training center, DogFest serves as our primary outreach event, allowing us to connect with and inspire people across our region. Every time you share why Canine Companions matters to you, you make a lasting impact.
We still need volunteers on Saturday, October 3 for transporting equipment to Reston Town Center, registration, event set-up & clean-up, monitoring dog water stations, assisting with contest sign-ups, and additional event support roles. AUGUST 2026 -- The Northeast Region has started a new initiative -- Livestream Watch Parties -- to help our extended Canine Companions family feel connected with all that goes on at our training center on Long Island. Watch our graduation ceremonies will four times a year in various locations around the Region, including one at the Dolly Madison Library in McLean on Friday, August 14 from 12pm to 2pm.
