Bland Music Competition

Promoting cultural and educational opportunities for musically talented youth in Virginia.

History & Mission:

The Lions of Virginia Bland Music Scholarship Foundation, Inc., established in 1948, serves as a living memorial to James A. Bland, a prominent African-American composer of the late 19th century renowned for works like "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." The foundation's mission is to promote cultural and educational opportunities for musically talented youth in Virginia through annual music competitions. These contests, open to both vocalists and instrumentalists, commence at the local club level and progress through district and regional stages, culminating in a state-level competition. Each year, the foundation awards over $25,000 in scholarships and cash prizes to support the musical education of young artists. This initiative not only honors Bland's musical legacy but also fosters the development of future generations of musicians.

Schedule of Competitions:

The District 24-L competition will be held on March 29 at 1:30pm at the Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, 201 S Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314.

The VA State competition will be held at the State Convention on May 29 at the Delta Hotel in Bristol.
